It was high fashion during the 17th and the 18th Century to wear knee-high socks both among the military and civilians alike. European armies used a multitude of colours such as yellow, red, blue and white. Civilians were not limited to any particular regiment that dictated colour but they followed fashion and affordability depending on social class. For instance, working-class tended to wear muted colours so this is where you would find the grey socks that hide dirt well. Whereas the richer citizens bought colourful socks of different material and quality to display their wealth and influence.
